Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
