The Year 2026 Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. But, their prevalence has seemingly increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this phenomenon, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming appears uniquely strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of unique mechanics.
A number of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far.
If these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a true croaking cultural moment.
