Every sports leader will tell you leading an organisation is never standard office hours.

Incoming Women's Tennis Association (WTA) leader Valerie Camillo is familiar with dedicated effort through her career - including one as a board member of the entertainment company managing American iconic singer Dolly Parton's tourist attractions.

Beyond the expertise regarding Parton's portfolio, Camillo steps into the top of women's tennis armed with deep knowledge across sport and entertainment, having held senior leadership posts at the National Basketball Association (NBA), the premier ice hockey competition and professional baseball.

Camillo commences her tenure at the WTA next month, replacing the outgoing Steve Simon, whose 10-year tenure wraps up as he steps down.

When Camillo begins her new role later this month, she steps into of several key issues left by Simon.

The previous chair was commended two years ago for what was widely seen as a courageous moral stance in suspending WTA events across China.

It was a response following issues surrounding Chinese player Peng Shuai, not seen publicly in public for an extended period after accusing a top Chinese official of misconduct.

But the monetary fallout following the suspension hit hard.

The WTA agreed a multi-year agreement with the Saudis - providing unprecedented rewards setting new standards for the current season - indicating Camillo will oversee the discussion about subsequent arrangements in coming years.

Gulf financial support also provides substantial assistance for the tour's goal ensuring equal compensation during joint Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and WTA events by 2027 and other premier events within the decade.

The prospect regarding integration business interests together with ATP remains under consideration, with the two governing bodies seemingly understanding the importance of unification around broadcast, data and sponsorship deals.

The current fragmented landscape frequently results in audiences and sponsors confused and disillusioned.

Importantly, the leadership for both tours was challenged via court proceedings from the players' union, which has criticised both organizations for neglecting the interest of its stars.

Leadership understands the clear benefit of partnering with the wealthier men's tour, yet the new chair aims to avoid her tour from losing its voice in decision-making processes and marketing opportunities consequently.

Listening to concerns regarding calendar and player burnout will also be a key focus area.

Since her position requires she leads both competitors and competitions, she will have to listen to the needs from all sides and find equilibrium growing finances and athlete welfare creating that revenue.

Leadership changed hands as chief executive and chairman in 2023 - which followed tennis legend Martina Navratilova advocating for reform - and the organizational shift finalizes through installing fresh leadership.

Camillo is tasked with increasing the visibility of women's tennis and can draw inspiration from personal exposure of seeing how Grammy-winning Parton - via business enterprises and distinctive merchandise alongside artistic achievements establishing international fame - is heralded as a model of commercial development.

In the sporting sphere, Camillo will utilize her background gained while leading organizational functions for the NHL team sports organization - specifically improving the team's stadium as top facility - and serving as revenue head for the baseball team professional organization.

Camillo's familiarity with the commercial sophistication within major leagues - particularly how they unlock fan growth and draw financial backing through innovation - considered an important factor for choosing her.

Her move into women's tennis arrives during "a moment of accelerated growth and opportunity"according to the organization.

This is the moment across women's competitions. Income produced throughout female athletics last year reached record levels and market researchers anticipate achieving $2.5bn (£1.8bn) in the coming decade.

Camillo's mission will be to ensure the WTA and its leading stars - headed by Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek - take a significant slice of the pie.

"The tour features the most prominent female athletes internationally and occupy a privileged spot across female athletics," Camillo told.

"In women's competitions, funding, viewership and coverage are increasing exponentially.

"For most part the difficulty facing female athletics involves establishing recognition, gaining audience and engagement," stated the chair.

"Our challenge is a little different - having established legacy, with substantial heritage, massive worldwide audience, and some of the most famous, best-rewarded players worldwide."
