Oxford Union President-Elect Removed Due to Conservative Activist Posts
The future president of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.
The vote against George Abaraonye reached the required two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The controversy erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to celebrate the killing of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while speaking at a university in the United States.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.
The student leader is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
Election Results
The vote of confidence was conducted over the recent days, with results announced on Tuesday.
Official notices showed that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The notice confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".
His response categorically refuted that any representative acting for the student had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Ongoing Dispute
The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.
His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Reactions
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The message accused the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".
The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and stated that concerns submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the society in May.
