MHA Voice Actors Look Back on an Emotional Last Chapter: 'I’m Something of a Emotional Wreck'
The long-running anime series My Hero Academia has finally concluded, leaving viewers with a deep feeling of emotion that extends beyond the story itself. This superhero saga has always been more than a straightforward plot; it's a coming-of-age journey about optimism, resilience, and the true meaning of courage in a world full of trials. The final season drives these central ideas to their absolute limit, as Class 1-A confronts the aftermath of the Paranormal Liberation Front and a society on the edge of total chaos.
For a generation of viewers, the series, which debuted in 2015, served as their introduction to anime. From its hype-filled start to its emotional ending, it defined the genre for almost ten years. Its end truly signifies the close of an era. If you find yourself getting misty-eyed during the series finale, know that you are in good company. The English dub cast felt those very same feelings, pouring raw sentiment into their recordings for the last chapters.
Saying Farewell to a Defining Chapter
"It’s been such a wonderful thing to see this last installment bring together all these narrative strands into this huge, heartfelt release for these heroes," shared one actor. "And to be part of that, during that time, portraying the characters, is truly moving."
The challenge of the farewell isn't solely due to the plot. My Hero Academia became a defining chapter in the careers of its cast, and with its end comes the closing of an era they have carried with them for years.
"Just as a person, for whom this has been a daily reality for the majority of ten years, even if the dialogue I deliver isn’t particularly emotional, if it’s just my character being himself, every time I wrap recording, I become a blubbering wreck because it's ending. I am unprepared," admitted another seasoned performer.
Favorite Moments from the Last Season
Despite voicing their own signature characters, several actors still have personal favorite characters beyond their roles, heroes whose story arcs affected them just as hard on an emotional level.
"The thing that’s taken me aback so far in my watching of the last episodes is how numerous characters are bringing me to tears," said one actor. "Be it All Might’s fight at the very start of this season, Aizawa, [even] the Shining Hero made me tear up this season!"
The actors behind the sibling dynamic of Shoto and Dabi were also swept up in the tragedy of their complex relationship, especially during the brothers’ confrontations across the final chapters.
A Powerful Moment
"Just a couple of days ago, a castmate said something as his character that, really, if you took it out of context, it’s a simple line, it shouldn’t do anything, but he asks his brother a question, and the way it was performed was so real and beautiful," recalled one actor. "It influenced the performance I gave. I adore my castmates, they’re so talented at this, and I cannot stress enough that I’m so fortunate."
Another actor agreed wholeheartedly, clarifying that the seemingly simple line traces back to a brief, lighthearted moment introduced earlier, one that comes full circle in the ending and carries devastating emotional weight.
"Fast-forward to the final season, when they’re visiting, and [the character] says, 'Wait, I need more time'," the actor said. "Yes, it was just a way to try to connect. It was just a line, but within the story, it's everything. It's love, acceptance, sorrow..."
"... and penitence," added the other, clearly moved. "Those boys should’ve been able to talk like that."
